HEEELP ME!!!

So I am now in Greenville, SC for the week for a New Financial Aid Officers training. Sounds fun right??

Day 1:
It’s only been a 1/2 day for this conference and I’ve had enough. Ok, not really. I’m learning so many things and its great to be surrounded by people that are in the same boat as you…but there is a cheesy youth camp theme going on.

For example, all the leaders are wearing camo today because it’s supposed to be “boot camp.” Also, our classrooms are decorated with a theme like a VBS room would be. We’re split up on teams that represent miltary things- like Mash, Army, Unit, etc. Our teams are doing this scavenger hunt thing all week. Oh, and we all need to wear our group shirts tomorrow for the class pictures! I went to the cookout tonight, but skipped out of the t-shirt swap and other various events going on tonight.

When I got my plate tonight at the cook out I just stood there for a while. I felt like a new kid on the first day of high school in the cafeteria. Most people came with someone or they know people here. I finally sat down and just ate quickly and left. I’m not in a social mood right now. Maybe tommorrow. Even though it’s only the first day, it’d be nice to just see a familiar face.

The campus is beautiful!! There are fountains everywhere; the whole campus is just massive. The “dorm” or apartment I’m staying in is almost better than the first apartment I had in Bham. I’ve only met one of my roommates in passing today.

I’m off to actually find an internet connection so I can post this. I’ll post mostly pictures tomorrow. I’m about to check out the fitness center, that makes me happy.

Day 2:
Btw- I’m more familiar with the campus today and it’s not THAT big. It’s just really big when everything looks the same and you’re lost.

I am tired of people acting like things in my life are just so odd that they have to comment about it. I’ve had so many comments like this….”oh my gosh, no way, you really can’t be the director of financial aid at a school, you’re too young.”

Here are some things I’ve heard today:
“Wait, you’re married?? You can’t be! You’re too young!”
“Oh are you a college student at Furman?” “Uh..no. I’m here with you guys.”
“What year are you in school?”
“What department did you transfer from to be in financial aid?” “None. I just graduated in May.”

It’s been like this all day. It wears me out having to explain that yes, I’m young, and yes I really am the director, and yes, I’m married. I didn’t know 22 was so young for such things!

I wasn’t as negative about things today. I just kept thinking its Wednesday, but then realizing its only Monday. Not time to go home yet.

I ventured out tonight to find a coffee shop and got so lost. Then looked for a mall and got lost again. I found a Goodwill with some great clothes, but they don’t take credit cards so I was out of luck. If anything, I did realize tonight that I’m not a fan of Greenville and how it’s set up.

Reid secretly packed Moose in my luggage so he’s been my sleeping partner for the week. I’m about to head that way. I’ll try to post pictures tomorrow.

  1. Hey there saw your site. It cool that you are getting into financial aid. The industry needs it. People are so frustrated with the lines at the financial aid offices at their colleges. What do you plan to do when you become a fin. aid officer? I’ve learned a lot from the website http://www.studentaidcenters.org and would like to see more people get involved to help students and graduates. Keep it going!

  2. Sounds like you’re having a lovely time…So twice in the past week I’ve been asked what grade I am in high school…I wasn’t aware that I looked that young. People have been like what, you’re a senior in college, no way. I’m thinking I’m pretty sure I am. I somewhat feel your frustration. I’m so excited about this themed financial aid conference, though. I didn’t know that financial aid conferences were like youth camp. I should try this out! Sounds quite interesting. Can’t wait to see the pics. Heehee. Well, have mucho fun the rest of the week. I bet by the time you get back, you’ll be wearing one of those wonderful jumpsuits. :)

  3. sounds like alot of fun ash!! hang in there it will be over before you know it!
