Yesterday morning I started questioning why I’m in Homiletics, besides the fact that its required for my program. Speech classes have never been a problem for me; however, “teaching/preaching” to my peers is very different.

After a class discussion about preaching and considering the different aspects of it, I’m actually happy that I’m in this class. We’re diverse in our thinking about it– a couple of people in the class think it should be all about application, when others in the class think it should be about teaching and Biblical concepts. We’re not alone in our divide in the class–there’s a divide among pastors today in how they’re teaching.

From Dr. Malick (my professor for this class)
“I see today that preachers are preaching their theology. They don’t get in trouble because their theology is ok. How can you be critical? What they’re saying is all true. The question I have is ‘Is that passage really saying what they’re referring to?’” We do it backwards. We find something, then go to the Scripture to support it.”

It will be a challenging class, considering I have to teach/preach three times–my testimony (geared around a verse of Scripture), once on a passage from an epistle, and then a passage from a Psalm or narrative. He’s also filming us everytime we speak. Scary! It’ll be good for me. As critical as I have been on preachers in the past, I guess this is my turn. HA!
